Bollywood Races to Register Film Titles Inspired by ‘Operation Sindoor’

Bollywood filmmakers and actors have quickly jumped on the bandwagon to register film titles inspired by India’s recent military operation in Pakistan, dubbed ‘Operation Sindoor’. Within just two days, more than 30 applications have been submitted to film industry bodies like the Indian Motion Picture Producers Association (IMPPA), Indian Film and Television Producers Council (IFTPC), and Western India Film Producers’ Association (WIFPA).

The operation, which involved targeted strikes on terror sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, came two weeks after the tragic massacre of 26 people in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam. In response to the operation, filmmakers have been eager to secure titles like ‘Operation Sindoor’, ‘Mission Sindoor’, and ‘Sindoor: The Revenge’, among others. Some titles also reference the Pahalgam attack, such as ‘Pahalgam: The Terror Attack’ and ‘Pahalgam Attack’.

Anil Nagrath, Secretary of IMPPA, mentioned that it’s common for filmmakers to apply for titles inspired by current news events that capture national pride. Titles based on major past events, like Kargil and Uri, also saw similar surges in applications. Popular filmmakers, including Aditya Dhar, Suniel Shetty, Madhur Bhandarkar, Vivek Agnihotri, and production houses like T-Series, are among those who have applied for the titles.

The process for title registration is straightforward. The title goes to the person who applies first, and the registration is valid for three years. If the film is not completed within that time frame, the title will be reassigned. The application fee for registering a title is Rs 300, with an urgent registration fee of Rs 3,000.

Interestingly, Reliance Industries Limited and several other companies also filed applications for the term ‘Operation Sindoor’ to be used for entertainment-related services, like film and media production. However, Reliance later withdrew its application, stating it was submitted mistakenly by a junior employee without proper authorization.

This rush for titles highlights the growing trend of Bollywood capitalizing on real-life events to create content that resonates with national sentiment.
