Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the site of the tragic Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad on Friday morning. The crash, which happened just after takeoff on Thursday, claimed the lives of 265 people, including 241 passengers on board and others at the crash site. Only one person, Vishwas Kumar Ramesh, survived the accident.
Modi arrived at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport and went straight to the crash site near B J Medical College in the Meghaninagar area. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner (AI171), flying to London, crashed into the college hostel and mess building soon after takeoff.
At the site, PM Modi spent around 20 minutes inspecting the damage and was briefed by Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu and Gujarat Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi about the incident.
Later, he visited the city civil hospital and met the injured victims who are being treated in Ward C7. Modi also interacted with the doctors and spoke personally with the lone survivor, Vishwas Kumar Ramesh. His visit to the hospital lasted about 10 minutes.
The aircraft had 242 people on board, including former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. Among the passengers were 168 Indians, 53 British nationals, 7 Portuguese, and 1 Canadian. Tragically, all except Vishwas lost their lives.
PM Modi is now holding meetings with state and aviation officials at the GujSail office to review the situation and ensure further support for the victims and their families.
