Chandigarh Sizzles at 42.1°C, Season’s Hottest Day; Heat Wave Alert Issued for Punjab

Chandigarh experienced the hottest day of the season on Sunday as temperatures soared to 42.1 degrees Celsius, the highest recorded so far this year. The reading was taken at the Meteorological Department’s observatory in Sector 39 and marked a sharp increase of 2.2 degrees from Saturday’s temperature. It was also 3.3 degrees above the normal temperature for this period.

The heat wave was not limited to Chandigarh alone. Southern and western parts of Punjab also experienced extreme temperatures ranging between 40 and 42.6 degrees Celsius. Bathinda recorded the highest temperature in the region at a blistering 44.8 degrees, while Anandpur Sahib was relatively cooler at 39 degrees.

The minimum temperature in Chandigarh was 28.9 degrees Celsius, while Faridkot reported the highest minimum in the region at 30.5 degrees. Anandpur Sahib recorded the lowest minimum temperature of 25.9 degrees Celsius on Sunday.

According to officials from the Meteorological Centre, maximum temperatures across northern and eastern parts of Punjab, including Chandigarh, are currently ranging from 37 to 40 degrees Celsius. They warned that temperatures are expected to rise further by around 3 degrees Celsius over the next three days, possibly reaching 43 to 46 degrees in some areas. This spike could lead to official heat wave conditions in parts of the state.

The department also predicted warm nights in some areas, which could add to the discomfort during this hot spell. People have been advised to take precautions, stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, and limit outdoor activities during peak daytime hours.
