As the wheat procurement season approaches its end, farmers and commission agents (arhtiyas) in Muktsar district are growing anxious over delays in lifting procured wheat from local grain markets.
According to data from the district administration, 8,94,849 metric tonnes (MT) of wheat had reached the mandis by Monday evening. Of this, 8,91,772 MT was purchased by government agencies and private firms. However, only 6,71,620 MT has been transported so far, leaving a backlog of 2,20,152 MT still lying in the markets.
Daily wheat arrival has now reduced significantly, with just 5,469 MT arriving on Monday. Despite this, the large quantity still awaiting lifting is raising concern, especially with unseasonal rains and dust storms affecting grain quality. Some of the wheat stock has already been damaged by rain, adding to the worries of farmers and buyers.
A local commission agent said that while the pace of lifting is currently normal, weather conditions are unpredictable, and it is important that the remaining wheat be moved quickly to avoid further damage.
A senior official assured that efforts are being made to coordinate with procurement agencies and transporters to speed up the process. He added that with reduced arrivals, the backlog is expected to be cleared soon.
Farmers, however, continue to demand quicker action to protect their produce and prevent financial losses.
