A weekend meant to bring relief from the intense heat turned tragic in Jhajjar district, as the bodies of two cousins, Amit (32) and Vikas (28), were found on Sunday morning in the Akehri Madanpur pump house, two days after they went missing while bathing in the Jawaharlal Nehru Canal near Matanhail village.
The duo, both residents of Azad Nagar, had entered the canal on Friday evening to escape the scorching temperatures. Their motorbike, slippers, and wallets were later discovered abandoned near the canal bank, raising alarm. Despite immediate search and rescue operations involving divers and boats, the efforts to locate them remained unsuccessful until the grim discovery on Sunday.
Staff at the Akehri Madanpur pump house spotted debris clogging the filter system, prompting them to alert police. The authorities, accompanied by a Forensic Science Laboratory team, examined the site and recovered the bodies.
Amit and Vikas worked as apprentice carpenters in Khaparwas village. Their employer confirmed they had left work early on Friday, intending to bathe in the canal. Their families filed missing person reports when the two failed to return home.
Police officials noted that although both were reportedly competent swimmers, the canal’s strong current and elevated water levels likely caused them to drown.
Following a preliminary forensic examination, the bodies were sent to Jhajjar Civil Hospital for postmortem and later handed over to their families.
Both men were married with young children, leaving behind grieving families and a saddened community.
