US President Donald Trump praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling him a “very smart man” and a “great friend of mine,” while discussing the tariff talks between India and the United States. Trump emphasized that he expects the trade discussions to “work out very well” between the two nations.
Trump’s comments come after his repeated criticism of India’s high tariffs on American goods. He acknowledged that India is one of the highest tariffing nations and described the situation as “brutal,” but expressed optimism that the talks would be successful.
The remarks were made during a White House briefing on Friday, where Trump also mentioned his recent talks with Modi, following the Prime Minister’s visit to Washington in February. Trump had previously stated that reciprocal tariffs would be imposed on countries imposing high tariffs on American products starting April 2.
