The political situation in Nepal is extremely unstable as of September 9, 2025. In the midst of huge and violent “Gen Z” protests, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has apparently resigned. This is a synopsis of the most recent news.
- Violence and Protests: Originally sparked by a government ban on a number of social media sites for violating local registration laws, the protests have grown into a larger movement against economic inequality and government corruption. At least 19 individuals have reportedly been killed in skirmishes with police as a result of the demonstrations turning violent.
- PM Oli’s Resignation: Prime Minister Oli has submitted his resignation in response to the escalation of protests and the resignation of several important ministries, including the Home Minister. Demonstrators also allegedly set fire to his private home.
