The MLA’s arrest and escape.
After being charged with rape, cheating, and criminal intimidation, Punjab MLA Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra has been embroiled in a significant controversy. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) politician, who represents the Sanour seat, was detained and thereafter allegedly fled from police custody.
He recently publicly criticised the leadership of his own party and the Punjab government’s flood prevention efforts, which led to this legal issue. He stated that severe flooding resulted from a senior IAS officer allegedly rejecting his requests to desilt waterways in his constituency. Additionally, he claimed that the Delhi-based AAP central leadership was “illegitimately ruling over Punjab” and working to silence local MLAs.
In response to his criticism, Pathanmajra said that police personnel in his constituency were transferred and his security was withdrawn, which he perceived as reprisal. He has claimed that the rape lawsuit is an attempt to suppress him and has political motivations. However, according to the police, he was taken into custody in relation to a rape case that a Zirakpur woman had filed.
With certain MLAs voicing dissatisfaction over the party’s decision-making process and the alleged influence of the central leadership, this event underscores the rising tensions inside the AAP’s Punjab chapter.
