Suspended AAP MLA Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh on Monday hit out at the party’s top leadership, saying they had no right to suspend him — especially after the party’s poor performance in the recent Delhi Assembly elections, where many of its top leaders couldn’t even retain their seats.
The Amritsar legislator was suspended for five years on Sunday for allegedly going against the party’s interests. Reacting strongly, he said, “They lost the right to suspend me after that defeat.”
Vijay Pratap has been openly critical of the AAP government for a while. After the spurious liquor tragedy in Amritsar, he had alleged that people involved in the illegal liquor business had become part of the ruling system and were now “running the show.”
He also raised questions about the recent arrest of SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia in a disproportionate assets case, saying the timing and intention behind the move were unclear.
In a media interview, the former IPS officer pointed out that Majithia was jailed by the Congress government in 2021 in a drug-related case. But after AAP came to power, they didn’t pursue the case seriously — no police remand or formal charge sheet was filed — which led to Majithia getting bail in August 2022.
Now, Majithia has been booked in a fresh assets case, but Vijay Pratap said it wouldn’t hold up in court because Majithia comes from a wealthy family.
He also claimed that the AAP is in power today in Punjab partly because of the goodwill he earned during his 25 years as an IPS officer. “When I joined AAP, they used my face everywhere to build their credibility. My posters were everywhere and I went door-to-door for them,” he added.
Vijay Pratap also said the party suffered when Arvind Kejriwal apologised to Majithia in a defamation case, as several leaders lost trust and left AAP after that.
