The Supreme Court on Friday criticized Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for making “irresponsible” remarks about freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. The court said that such comments should not be made and added, “Let’s not mock our freedom fighters.”
Although the court stopped the criminal proceedings against Rahul in a case filed in Uttar Pradesh, it also warned him not to make such statements again. The court said it could take action on its own if similar remarks are made in the future.
A bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and Manmohan asked Rahul’s lawyer, senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, if Rahul was aware that even Mahatma Gandhi had used respectful phrases like “your faithful servant” in letters to the British.
The court sent notices to the complainant, lawyer Nripendra Pandey, and the Uttar Pradesh government, asking for their replies to Rahul’s appeal. The case was originally filed against Rahul Gandhi for allegedly insulting Savarkar during a public rally. He was charged with promoting enmity and causing public mischief.
Rahul approached the Supreme Court after the Allahabad High Court refused to cancel the summons issued against him in the case.
