The Supreme Court of India reached its full strength of 34 judges on Friday, after three new judges were sworn in.
Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai administered the oath of office to Justice NV Anjaria, Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court; Justice Vijay Bishnoi, Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court; and Justice Atul S Chandurkar from the Bombay High Court. Justice Bishnoi took his oath in Hindi. The brief ceremony lasted around 10 minutes and was attended by Supreme Court judges, lawyers, and staff.
The appointments were based on recommendations made by the Supreme Court Collegium, led by CJI Gavai, on May 26. The Centre officially confirmed the appointments on Thursday. These new appointments fill the vacancies left by the retirements of former CJI Sanjiv Khanna, Justice Hrishikesh Roy, and Justice Abhay S Oka. Another judge, Justice Bela M Trivedi, is scheduled to retire on June 9.
Justice NV Anjaria began his career in 1988 in the Gujarat High Court under senior advocate SN Shelat. He handled a variety of cases, including constitutional and civil matters. He was appointed an Additional Judge in 2011, became a permanent judge in 2013, and was made Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court in 2023.
Justice Vijay Bishnoi enrolled as an advocate in 1989 and practiced at the Rajasthan High Court and the Central Administrative Tribunal. He also served as the Additional Central Government Standing Counsel. He became an Additional Judge in 2013, a permanent judge in 2015, and was appointed Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court in February 2024.
Justice Atul S Chandurkar started his legal career in Mumbai in 1988 and later moved to Nagpur. Known for his wide legal expertise, he was appointed an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court in 2013. He is also the author of two legal books related to Maharashtra’s municipal and rent control laws.
With these appointments, the Supreme Court is now operating at its full sanctioned strength.
