Punjab BJP President Sunil Jakhar has written a letter to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, asking for a high-level investigation into the drug money trail in Punjab. He wants the probe to be supervised by the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court so that the “real beneficiaries” — including powerful politicians and officials — can be exposed.
Jakhar said that drug cartels in Punjab cannot operate without support from influential people. “Drugs worth thousands of crores have been recovered in Punjab. That clearly shows how deep the problem is,” he said. “It’s not just a coincidence that many politicians who were once poor now drive luxury cars and own big farmhouses.”
He stressed that unless the money trail is properly investigated, the fight against drugs will remain just a show. Jakhar called for the probe to track not only drug-related money but also funds from illegal mining and the sand mafia.
He also said that the Enforcement Directorate should be brought in if money laundering is involved.
“To show my sincerity, I offer myself to be the first person to be investigated,” Jakhar said, adding that leaders from all parties — including ministers, MLAs, and party heads — should also be included in the probe.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab had launched the “Yudh Nashian Virudh” campaign about three-and-a-half months ago. Since then, over 17,000 drug smugglers have been arrested and many drug consignments have been seized.
But Jakhar believes that without exposing the big names behind the scenes, the campaign will not be taken seriously.
