A day after four police officers in Fazilka were arrested for allegedly taking a bribe from a minor boy, the Punjab government took swift action and suspended SSP Varinder Brar on Wednesday.
According to an official spokesperson, the suspension came after a thorough investigation linked the senior officer to the case involving serious corruption charges.
The issue came to light when a local resident submitted video evidence directly to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann through the state’s anti-corruption helpline. The videos allegedly showed officers from the Cyber Crime police station in Fazilka demanding ₹1 lakh from the boy’s family in return for releasing his confiscated phone.
Despite several efforts by the family to resolve the matter legally, they were reportedly pressured into paying the bribe. The officers arrested include the Station House Officer (SHO), a reader, and two constables.
On Tuesday, Finance Minister Harpal Cheema announced the arrests and reiterated the government’s firm stance on corruption, calling it a zero-tolerance zone.
This bold step by the government has sent a strong message that no one, regardless of rank, will be spared in the fight against corruption.
