Congress Parliamentary Party leader Sonia Gandhi will chair an important meeting on Tuesday to decide the party’s plan for the upcoming Monsoon session of Parliament. The session is expected to see strong debates between the government and the opposition.
The Congress and other opposition parties plan to raise several issues. One key concern is the Election Commission’s decision to start a special revision of the voter list in Bihar. The opposition is also demanding discussions on the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, the Indian military strike in Pakistan (Operation Sindoor), and the government’s diplomatic response.
The strategy meeting will be held at Sonia Gandhi’s residence at 10, Janpath. It will be attended by senior leaders including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi.
The Monsoon session will start on July 21 and continue till August 21, which is a week longer than originally planned. The extension suggests the government is planning to introduce several important bills.
One of the major laws the government wants to bring in will allow private companies to enter the nuclear energy sector. To do this, it will make changes to the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act and the Atomic Energy Act.
Opposition leaders also want a clear explanation from the government regarding former US President Donald Trump’s claim that he helped stop a nuclear war between India and Pakistan. The government has denied this, and Prime Minister Modi has told Trump that India does not and will not accept any outside mediation in its issues with Pakistan.
