Harjinder Singh, also known as Baman, a municipal councilor from Jandiala Guru and a member of the Shiromani Akali Dal, was shot dead in the Chheharta area of Amritsar on Sunday.
According to the police, the attackers came on a motorcycle with their faces covered. Harjinder Singh was walking with his family to a nearby eatery after attending a function when he was shot. He was seriously injured and died on the way to the hospital.
Police believe this was a planned killing by a gangster named Kishan, who is currently in Dubai and has over 15 criminal cases against him. An old rivalry is thought to be the reason behind the murder.
Harpal Singh, the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP), said that names of five suspects have come up: Kishan, Karan, Ghuddu, Goldy, and Raju. The police have launched a search to catch them.
Vinod Kumar, the Station House Officer (SHO) of Chheharta, said CCTV footage from the area is being checked for clues.
An eyewitness, Karamjit Singh, said he was in his shop nearby and rushed out after hearing gunshots. He saw Harjinder Singh lying in a pool of blood and two masked men fleeing on a bike.
Family members said Harjinder had received threats recently and had also survived an earlier shooting on May 12, when unknown people fired outside his house. They also said he was actively speaking out against drug peddlers in the area, which may have led to the attack.
Sources said that Kishan, one of the main suspects, is close to gangster Happy Jatt. Kishan had been arrested earlier and was released on parole but escaped to Dubai using a fake passport.
