SGPC Seeks Suggestions on Takht Jathedars’ Rules, Urges Centre to Decide Fate of Bandi Sikhs

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has asked Sikh scholars, organisations, and individuals to send their suggestions about the service rules of Takht jathedars—the religious heads of the Sikh community.

This move comes after criticism over the sudden removal of some jathedars. The SGPC now plans to make clear rules about how jathedars are appointed, their duties, and how they can be removed.

Suggestions can be sent to the SGPC in person or through email (info@sgpc.net) and WhatsApp (7710136200) by April 20. SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami said that many suggestions have already come in, and a committee will be formed after the deadline to review and draft a final policy.

In the same meeting, the SGPC also discussed the long-pending cases of Balwant Singh Rajoana and other Bandi Sikhs (Sikh prisoners). They criticised the Central ਸਰਕਾਰ for delaying decisions on these cases, calling it discrimination against the Sikh community.

The SGPC passed a special resolution asking the Supreme Court to direct the ਸਰਕਾਰ to take immediate action on commuting Rajoana’s ਮੌਤ sentence, as he has been on ਮੌਤ row since 2007. They also requested the Prime ਮੰਤਰੀ to step in and ensure justice is done.
