The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) on Monday strongly disapproved of a recent statement by Major General Kartik C Seshadri, who claimed that Pakistan had attempted to target the Golden Temple with drones and missiles during the recent cross-border hostilities.
Major General Seshadri, General Officer Commanding of the 15 Infantry Division, had made the remarks during an interview with a media outlet, stating that Indian forces successfully intercepted the threats launched by Pakistan.
These attacks reportedly followed India’s air strikes on nine terror camps in Pakistan in response to the deadly Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, which claimed 26 lives. Hostilities between the two nations continued for three days, ending with a ceasefire on May 10.
Reacting sharply to the Army officer’s claim, SGPC chief secretary Kulwant Singh Mannan said he did not believe such a version, adding, “No force can even think of attacking the abode of Guru Ram Das.” He further stated that the daily flow of devotees (sangat) to the shrine remained unaffected.
Meanwhile, Punjab Cabinet Minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal condemned Pakistan’s alleged attempt, saying it reflected “a negative mindset to attack a universally revered religious site.”
Amritsar MP Gurjit Singh Aujla thanked the Indian Army for neutralising the threats and protecting the Golden Temple. He recalled that on May 10, Sikhs had protested against what they saw as deliberate targeting of gurdwaras by Pakistan.
Earlier in the day, BJP leader Amit Malviya also weighed in, posting on X, “Indian Army’s confirmation of drone and missile attacks targeting the Golden Temple is both shocking and deeply disturbing… It shows Pakistan’s true intent to spread chaos and hurt the soul of India.”
The SGPC’s reaction has sparked debate over the claim, with concerns about both the safety of religious sites and the sensitivity of statements made about them.
