The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has strongly criticized the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab for arresting senior party leader Bikram Singh Majithia, calling it a case of “political vendetta” and a “murder of democracy.”
At a press conference on Thursday, SAD leaders Balwinder Singh Bhunder, Maheshinder Singh Grewal, and Daljit Singh Cheema alleged that the AAP government had bypassed legal procedures by filing a disproportionate assets case against Majithia without conducting a proper preliminary investigation.
“This case is nothing but an attempt to mislead the public and cover up the government’s failure in its anti-drugs campaign,” said Grewal. He questioned the AAP’s claim that Majithia laundered ₹540 crore in drug money, calling it a “bundle of lies” and demanding to know where the complaint detailing the figure was.
According to the SAD, even the court was told that the case is only about disproportionate assets — not money laundering. Grewal further stated that many of the properties mentioned in the complaint had been in the Majithia family long before Bikram Singh Majithia was even born, highlighting their status as a historically wealthy landlord family.
Cheema pointed out that these same allegations were presented before the Supreme Court in a plea to cancel Majithia’s bail in a previous drug case — but the Court did not act on them. “Now, the same accusations have just been recycled into a new case,” he said.
Bhunder, meanwhile, described the AAP government’s actions as “undemocratic” and politically motivated. “They are trying to trap Majithia in a false case,” he said, while also thanking other Opposition parties, including the BJP, for supporting Majithia.
The SAD leaders said they would continue to fight what they described as a misuse of power and urged the public to see through what they claim is a campaign of deflection by the AAP government.
