Rajya Sabha Confirms President’s Rule in Manipur; Opposition Slams Centre Over Violence

The Rajya Sabha has approved the imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur. This means the central government will now run the state, as the Chief Minister Biren Singh resigned in February.

Home Minister Amit Shah said that 260 people have died in the Manipur violence, but most of them were killed in the first 15 days. He also said that no violence has been reported since November 2024 and that talks between the Kuki and Meitei communities are happening to restore peace.

The opposition parties blamed the central government for not controlling the situation. Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge said the government failed to protect the people and should have acted earlier. He asked Prime Minister Modi to visit Manipur and talk to the people.

Other leaders from AAP and Shiv Sena (UBT) also asked the government to bring back elections and restore peace in the state.

Amit Shah responded by saying violence in Manipur has reduced under the Modi government, and also pointed out violence in other states like West Bengal during opposition rule.

The next steps will include efforts to restore law and order and possibly hold elections in Manipur again.
