flooding threat
Rivers are swelling as a result of heavy rains in Punjab and the discharge of extra water from dams in Himachal Pradesh, creating a situation akin to flooding in numerous regions.
The water level of the Ravi, Beas, and Satluj rivers has risen dramatically.
The risk of flooding has increased in places downstream as a result of the opening of the gates of the Bhakra Dam and the Ranjit Sagar Dam on the Ravi River.
At least six districts—Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Fazilka, and Amritsar—have been asked to close their schools because of the heavy rainfall and possible flooding.
Twenty villages near the Sutlej River in Fazilka have closed their schools.
Schools in Hoshiarpur are off on August 26 and 27.
A special “girdawari” (loss assessment) has been announced by the government to ascertain the extent of property and crop damage in the impacted districts.
Government representatives are giving goods to impacted households as part of ongoing relief efforts.
To handle the issue and offer assistance, a central flood control room has been established in Jalandhar that is open around the clock.
