Rahul Gandhi Slams Centre for Denying Overseas Scholarships to Backward Class Students

Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Monday strongly criticised the Modi-led NDA government for denying overseas scholarships to students from backward communities due to lack of funds.

Rahul claimed that 66 out of 106 selected students under the National Overseas Scholarship scheme were denied financial support to study abroad. He alleged the decision was driven by bias against Dalit, backward, and tribal students.

“When a Dalit, backward, or tribal student wants to study, the Modi government suddenly remembers the budget,” Rahul said.

He questioned the government’s priorities, pointing out that while funds are reportedly unavailable for students, crores are spent on the Prime Minister’s foreign tours, events, and publicity. His remarks come as PM Modi is currently on a five-nation tour.

“There’s no shortage of money when it comes to Modi ji’s travels and event planning, but when it comes to sending Bahujan students abroad for education, the government pleads poverty,” Rahul added.

He demanded that the Centre immediately reverse what he called an “inhuman” decision and ensure all 66 students receive their scholarships. “We will not let the fundamental right to education be taken away from the Bahujans,” he asserted.

Rahul also accused the BJP and RSS of blocking educational opportunities for backward class students. “Children of BJP-RSS leaders face no such issues. But when a Bahujan student makes progress, the system puts up roadblocks,” he said.

The Congress MP further criticised the reduction of government schools, denial of scholarships, and rejections under unclear criteria like “Not Found Suitable.” He said these moves reflect the BJP’s resistance to Bahujan education.

“This is not just injustice—it is a deliberate attempt to halt the progress of backward communities. It is the same Manuvadi mindset that once demanded Eklavya’s thumb,” Rahul concluded.
