Rahul Gandhi Alleges ‘Match-Fixing’ in Maharashtra Polls, BJP Hits Back Over Rigging Claims

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has alleged that the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections were a “blueprint to rig democracy,” calling the process similar to “match-fixing.” He warned that such tactics could next be used in Bihar or in any state where the BJP is losing ground.

In a detailed post on X (formerly Twitter), Gandhi explained what he claims was a step-by-step plan to manipulate the elections. He accused the BJP of:

1. Controlling who gets appointed to the Election Commission

2. Adding fake voters to the list

3. Inflating voter turnout

4. Targeting fake votes in areas critical for BJP wins

5. Hiding the evidence afterward

He said, “Rigging elections is like match-fixing. You may win, but it damages institutions and destroys people’s trust in democracy.”

Gandhi also cited data showing a suspicious increase in the number of registered voters — a jump of 41 lakh between the Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha elections in just five months. He questioned how the total number of registered voters could exceed the number of adults in Maharashtra.

He also pointed to polling day figures, saying that voter turnout suddenly jumped by nearly 8% after voting officially ended, which he believes added about 76 lakh votes — a spike he calls unusual and unexplained.

The BJP strongly denied these allegations-

BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari accused Gandhi of trying to discredit the electoral process because he fears losing in Bihar. He called Gandhi’s claims “inconsistent” and questioned why Congress candidates didn’t file legal complaints if they truly believed the results were fake.

Amit Malviya, head of BJP’s IT Cell, said Gandhi is intentionally trying to create distrust in democratic institutions. He added that Congress praises the same election system when they win — like in Telangana or Karnataka — but blame it when they lose.

Malviya also compared Gandhi’s strategy to that of global political disruptors, saying, “This is straight from George Soros’ playbook — erode public trust so institutions can be weakened from within.”

Gandhi, however, maintained that the people of India have a right to transparency. He concluded, “Voter lists and CCTV footage aren’t secrets. They are tools to protect democracy — not to be locked away.”
