A recent air quality analysis by the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) has revealed alarming levels of air pollution across the state, extending far beyond the usual concern of stubble burning. Data collected between January and June 2025 shows that key cities including Ludhiana, Amritsar, Jalandhar, and Patiala consistently recorded PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations above the National Ambient Air Quality Standards.
Experts say the sources of pollution are now year-round and multifaceted—ranging from vehicular emissions and industrial discharges to open waste burning and poor road infrastructure. While stubble burning contributes seasonally during the harvesting cycles, the core issue lies in inadequate pollution control regulations for other major emission sources.
Environmentalist groups are urging the Punjab Government to implement stringent long-term measures such as electric public transport, modernized waste management systems, and industrial audits. Residents in urban pockets are already reporting an increase in respiratory illnesses, prompting doctors to issue health advisories.
With the Centre’s National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) monitoring progress, Punjab is now under pressure to act decisively or face reduced environmental funding.
