The Punjab Government told the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Monday that farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal is not in police custody and is free. He had been admitted to a hospital in Patiala by his own choice.
Justice Manisha Batra directed the government to ensure Dallewal’s family could visit him at the hospital without any problems. The state’s lawyer said Dallewal was in the hospital by his own decision and could leave whenever he wanted. He added that Dallewal’s family could meet him as long as they followed security rules.
However, Dallewal’s lawyer argued that the authorities were not allowing his family to visit him, and he wasn’t even being given water. After hearing both sides, Justice Batra ordered the government to let Dallewal’s family meet him at the hospital.
This case was part of a petition filed by Dallewal’s supporters, who claimed he was being held illegally. They argued that his detention was an attempt to stop the farmers’ movement and violate their rights to protest.
