The Punjab government has claimed that senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia’s security has only been reduced, not fully withdrawn. However, Majithia refuted this, stating that all his security personnel had been removed.
On Wednesday evening, Majithia accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government of changing its stance after facing political pressure. Earlier in the day, Punjab Police denied completely withdrawing his security, saying it had only been reduced based on a reassessment of the threat level. A government spokesperson clarified that security reviews happen periodically, and Majithia still has an escort vehicle and adequate gunmen for his safety.
Majithia countered by questioning why Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s personal assistant Bibhav Kumar had been given Z-plus security despite facing molestation charges. He also pointed out that Kejriwal and former Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia, both jailed in a liquor scam, had their security strengthened.
Meanwhile, Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Cheema commented that the Opposition’s unity on this issue showed that the previous Akali-BJP government had protected the drug mafia. AAP state president Aman Arora accused Congress, SAD, and BJP of supporting Majithia to prevent action against the drug problem in Punjab.
