Punjab’s Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema strongly criticized Opposition leaders on Monday, accusing them of being double-faced and opportunistic when it comes to the drug issue in the state.
Cheema claimed that the drug problem in Punjab became worse during the 10 years of SAD-BJP rule from 2007 to 2017. Speaking to the media, he said, “During those years, the drug trade in Punjab grew rapidly. Dangerous substances like heroin, smack, and synthetic drugs (known as ‘chitta’) spread widely. This dark phase in Punjab’s history is directly linked to the Akali-BJP government’s time in power.”
He added that now, when the AAP government is taking serious action against drug-related crimes, the same Opposition leaders who once promised to wipe out drugs are now defending the very people involved.
Cheema pointed out that earlier, many of these leaders had demanded action against senior Akali leader Bikram Singh Majithia. But now, according to him, they are trying to protect him.
He specifically named Congress leaders Partap Singh Bajwa, Sukhpal Singh Khaira, Charanjit Singh Channi, and BJP’s Ravneet Singh Bittu. “These leaders have no consistency. They change their stand for political gain while Punjab’s youth continue to suffer due to drugs,” Cheema said.
He accused these leaders of turning a blind eye to the drug problem when they were in power, and now playing politics instead of supporting real action against drug crime.
