Punjab CM Supports Diljit Dosanjh Amid Row Over Pakistani Actress in His Film

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has come out in support of popular singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh, who is facing backlash for casting Pakistani actress Hania Aamir in his upcoming film Sardaar Ji 3.

Some critics, including film industry groups like the All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) and the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE), called Diljit a “traitor” and even demanded the cancellation of his citizenship. Many on social media also joined in, calling for a ban on the film.

Bhagwant Mann defended the actor, saying the movie was shot in February—before the tragic terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22 that claimed 26 lives. He pointed out that the cultural bond between Punjab and Pakistan is strong, with both sides speaking Punjabi and sharing traditions.

“How can Diljit be called a traitor? The film was made before the attack. Now, a Pakistani hockey team will be allowed to play in India, and that’s okay? Why the double standards?” Mann questioned while speaking at an event.

The CM said Punjabis are being unfairly targeted by so-called nationalists who are jealous of Punjab’s success. He reminded everyone that Punjabis have made major contributions to India, including helping the country become self-sufficient in food and guarding its borders.

Due to the backlash and ban on Pakistani artists in India, Sardaar Ji 3 won’t be released in Indian theatres. Diljit explained that this forced the producers to release the movie only in overseas markets to recover losses.

“When we shot the film, things were normal. Nobody knew the situation would change later. It’s not in our hands,” Diljit said.

Interestingly, just months earlier, Diljit had met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi on New Year’s Day after wrapping up his India tour in Ludhiana. They reportedly spoke about music, culture, and India’s artistic heritage.

Tensions between India and Pakistan have escalated since the Pahalgam attack. On May 7, India launched “Operation Sindoor” and carried out strikes on terror camps across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in retaliation.

Despite the controversy, many Sikh leaders across political lines have backed Diljit, calling the criticism and calls to revoke his citizenship unfair.
