Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann laid the foundation stone for the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Government Medical College at Barnala Kalan village in Nawanshahr on Sunday. This is the third medical college project to be initiated in the Doaba region in the last three years, with an investment of about Rs 300 crore. The new college will offer 50 MBBS seats.
The new medical college will be attached to the District Civil Hospital, which currently lacks specialized medical facilities. The college will introduce advanced medical equipment and provide 24/7 access to specialist doctors. It will also include departments of surgery, pediatrics, orthopedics, and gynecology.
The Chief Minister made the announcement during a state-level event at Khatkar Kalan, the ancestral village of freedom fighter Bhagat Singh, on the occasion of his martyrdom day. Mann emphasized that the medical college was a long-standing demand from local residents, who had previously had to travel to far-off cities like Ludhiana, Jalandhar, or Chandigarh for medical treatment. He noted that SBS Nagar (Nawanshahr) has been underserved in terms of healthcare infrastructure due to neglect by previous governments.
While inaugurating the medical college project, the CM also paid tributes at the martyrs’ memorial in Khatkar Kalan, where he was accompanied by several members of his Cabinet, MLAs, and AAP leaders.
Interestingly, the Chief Minister did not address the ongoing police crackdown on farmers in his speech, but he did mention a recent case involving the discovery of cash at the home of a Delhi High Court judge. He expressed concerns about the possibility of wrongful decisions being made due to corruption, calling for honest work as the best tribute to the martyrs.
