The Punjab government has reorganized 155 blocks in the state to improve administration. This decision was taken during a cabinet meeting held at Punjab Bhavan. After the meeting, Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema shared the details in a press conference.
He said that many block names have been changed but no new blocks have been created. The aim is to help people and local leaders like Panchs and Sarpanchs avoid long travels of 15–20 kilometers for small tasks. This change will also help the government in better planning and smooth functioning.
Cheema said earlier block divisions made by the Rural Development and Panchayat Department were not practical which created problems in planning and development. The reorganization will now make it easier for the administration and local bodies to work together.
Regarding the ongoing water dispute, Cheema mentioned that Haryana has been using Punjab’s water for years but has not paid its share. Punjab has sent bills worth ₹113 crore to Haryana for the maintenance of canals and BBMB (Bhakra Beas Management Board) costs. This amount has been pending since the last amnesty.
Cheema also spoke about the Land Pooling Policy, which has now been updated with the farmers’ interests in mind. When asked about MP Kang posting and then deleting a comment in support of this policy on social media, Cheema said the message had reached the party leadership.
He also briefly commented on the case related to Amritpal’s alleged Tinder account calling it a serious matter that needs to be investigated.
