Punjab Cabinet Approves Key Amendments to Education and Prison Laws

The Punjab Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, on Friday approved significant amendments to improve education and prison management in the state.

One major decision was the amendment to the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Rules, 2011, aimed at increasing parental involvement in the management of government schools. The amendment proposes increasing the number of members on the school management committees from 12 to 16. The new composition will include 12 parents of students and four members with expertise in education, sports, and extracurricular activities. This change is intended to enhance the quality of education by encouraging more parental participation and ensuring community involvement in school activities. Some see this move as a way for the ruling party to involve its volunteers in the committees, which could help in better implementation of government schemes in the education sector.

The Cabinet also approved an amendment to the Transfer of Prisoner Act, 1950, allowing undertrial prisoners to be transferred from one state to another with the consent of both states involved and approval from the trial court. This change is expected to help alleviate overcrowding in Punjab’s prisons by enabling prisoners to be relocated as needed.

Additionally, the Cabinet approved the creation of new rules for Group A posts within the Social Security, Women, and Child Development Department. This move is aimed at improving the department’s functioning, which is expected to benefit the state’s vulnerable and underprivileged populations.
