Punjab Becomes First State to Offer Reservation in Law Officer Appointments

Punjab has made history by becoming the first state in India to offer reservation benefits in the appointment of law officers, a major move toward social justice and equality.

The announcement was made by Cabinet Minister Harbhajan Singh ETO, who said the state government had also reduced the income limit for Scheduled Caste (SC) candidates applying for these roles. This change will help fill reserved posts that often remained vacant due to strict income criteria.

The minister stressed that the AAP government is committed to uplifting Backward Classes and Scheduled Castes, noting that six Cabinet Ministers in Punjab are from the SC community. He also highlighted that the backlog of SC government jobs has been addressed.

“This policy is in line with the vision of Dr B.R. Ambedkar, who stood for equal representation and education for the marginalized,” said Singh.

He further stated that the AAP had been demanding this reform since 2017, and now the law has finally been amended. “We are committed to doing everything we can for this category, inspired by the ideals of Dr Ambedkar and Shaheed Bhagat Singh,” he added.
