Punjab Assembly Passes Bills Without Discussion, Opposition Raises Concerns

In a surprising move, the Punjab Assembly passed three important Bills in just 10 minutes on Friday, without any discussion. The Bills included the Indian Stamp (Punjab Amendment) Bill, 2025; the Transfer of Prisoners (Punjab Amendment) Bill, 2025; and the Punjab Regulation of Crusher Units, Stockists, and Retailers Bill, 2025.

A senior Congress MLA raised concerns that hard copies of the Bills were not given to lawmakers, and the documents were only available online. He mentioned that many MLAs were not familiar with technology and had trouble reading the Bills online. However, none of the Opposition MLAs raised the issue in the House.

During the Zero Hour, Independent MLA Rana Inder Pratap Singh expressed disappointment over being asked not to speak on the Budget discussion by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. He also criticized the health insurance scheme, stating that the amount allocated would only cover 0.12% of the beneficiaries.

SAD MLA Manpreet Singh Ayali did not criticize the ruling party but instead focused on the removal of three Takht Jathedars by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee. He called for rules to be made for the appointment of Jathedars.

During the Budget discussion, Congress leaders questioned the government about the delay in implementing the promised Rs 1000 per month honorarium for women. BSP’s lone MLA, Nachhatar Pal, praised the AAP government for allocating 34% of the Budget for the welfare of SCs in the state.
