The Punjab Assembly on Friday passed a resolution against the Centre’s move to deploy the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) at the dams managed by the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB). This step comes amid growing tension between Punjab and Haryana over the sharing of river waters.
Water Resources Minister Barinder Kumar Goyal presented the resolution. It stated that Punjab Police are fully capable and well-prepared to handle the security of these important installations.
The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) criticized the Opposition parties, blaming them for not protecting Punjab’s water rights during their time in power.
Earlier in the day, Congress MLAs staged a walkout after the Speaker refused to allow a discussion on the issue of gangster violence, including the recent murder of businessman Sanjay Verma in Abohar. Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan said there would be no Question Hour or Zero Hour due to the special session.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and other AAP members targeted Congress, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), and the BJP, accusing them of ignoring Punjab’s water interests for political gains.
Mann said Punjab and Haryana are like brothers and together contribute over 70% of the country’s foodgrain. He added that water-sharing agreements must be reviewed every 25 years to ensure fairness.
