Protest against the Kilometre Bus Scheme in Punjab: Bus Stands Closed from 12 PM to 2 PM, Roadways General Secretary Says—Benefit to Private Companies.
In protest against the government’s Kilometre Bus Scheme, all bus stands in Punjab will remain closed today from 12 PM to 2 PM. Speaking to the media in Amritsar, Jugraj Singh, General Secretary of Punjab Roadways, said that the government is once again opening tenders under the Kilometre Bus Scheme.
“We strongly oppose this scheme because it will directly impact thousands of private bus operators, drivers, conductors, and the general public in Punjab. As a result of this protest, all bus stands in Punjab will be kept closed today from 12 PM to 2 PM.”
Demand the Government Scheme Be Abandoned Right Away
“We demand that the government immediately halt this scheme and find a fair solution through talks with all parties,” stated the general secretary of Punjab Roadways. The traditional transport system will be impacted by the implementation of this plan, which will also provide private firms an unfair advantage while endangering the jobs of small bus owners and employees.
The Kilometre Bus Scheme: What is it?
According to Jugraj Singh, the Kilometre Bus Scheme is a government program that rents and operates buses owned by private enterprises. They receive a set rate each kilometre. The private corporation is responsible for the driver, fuel, and maintenance. While local enterprises and employees must bear the losses, private companies profit from this.
