The Electricity Department’s installation of chip-enabled smart meters was greeted with opposition from the residents of Rajewala village in Khanna, Ludhiana district. When the power workers arrived to install the smart meters, the villagers halted their progress and threatened to forbid the installation of the meters in their community.

Amrit Singh Bainipal, the farmer leader, vehemently objected to these meters. The government is discussing waiving up to 300 units of electricity every month, but it is also attempting to revoke the waiver by installing fast-running chip-enabled meters, or smart meters, he said. Farmers and the general public are being treated unfairly, according to Bainipal.
