Prime ਮੰਤਰੀ Narendra Modi is set to visit Sri Lanka on April 5, as announced by Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in a speech to the Sri Lankan Parliament on Friday. The visit aims to finalize agreements discussed during President Dissanayake’s visit to ਭਾਰਤ the previous year.
The visit will also coincide with the commencement of construction for the Sampur Power Plant in Trincomalee, a strategically important eastern port ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹਾ. This development marks a significant step in strengthening bilateral relations between ਭਾਰਤ and Sri Lanka.
President Dissanayake emphasized that Modi’s visit underscores the stability of Sri Lanka and reflects the ongoing positive developments between the two nations. One of the major highlights of the visit is the agreement reached last month between ਭਾਰਤ and Sri Lanka for the establishment of solar power plants on the island.
Sri Lankan Health ਮੰਤਰੀ Nalinda Jayathissa announced that two solar power plants with capacities of 50 Megawatts (Stage 1) and 70 Megawatts (Stage 2) will be set up at Sampur in Trincomalee. The project will be a joint venture between Sri Lanka’s Ceylon Electricity Board and ਭਾਰਤ’s National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), focusing on construction, ownership, and operation.
The original plan was for NTPC to build a coal-based power plant at the location, but the agreement has now been revised, converting the project into a solar power station. This initiative is seen as a major move towards clean energy cooperation between ਭਾਰਤ and Sri Lanka.
