Posters announcing the mayor’s disappearance were put up in Amritsar: Congress leader says ‘he’s focused on saving his seat’; Mayor’s response: ‘Give me some time.’
Rahul Sharma, the city president of the Youth Congress, caused a significant political uproar in Amritsar on Thursday when he posted posters throughout the city stating that Mayor Jatinder Singh Moti Bhatia was “missing”. Rahul Sharma told the reporters that the mayor’s first responsibility is to keep the city clean, but that Amritsar’s state has gotten much worse since Moti Bhatia took office. He claimed that there are trash heaps everywhere in the city these days, which leads to daily altercations amongst citizens. Sharma questioned how Amritsar, which was meant to be a lovely city as part of the smart city concept, had turned into a “garbage city”. By making grave accusations and intimidating the counsellors, Sharma was able to save his chair.
Sharma claimed that Mayor Moti Bhatia has prioritised preserving his seat over resolving people’s issues, even in the face of the Aam Aadmi Party government. Beginning the demonstration within a hundred metres from MLA Jasbir Singh Sandhu’s residence, he declared that the campaign will go on throughout the city until the people’s issues are resolved.
Sharma cautioned that this protest will intensify if the sanitation system is not fixed. According to him, it will not be accepted to tamper with the city’s residents’ health and beauty.
Why is there no cleanliness?
According to Amritsar Mayor Moti Bhatia, there is a problem with cleanliness because the business that held the sanitation contract abruptly quit. We are doing everything we can to make sure the sanitation is finished on schedule, he added. According to him, Amritsar’s trash will be cleared out within the next two to three days. The sanitation system would soon return to normal, he promised the populace.
