Trump claims to be attempting to set up a meeting between Zelenskyy and Putin in order to promote peace.
A “very good, early step” towards ending the almost four-year-old war, U.S. President Donald Trump announced Monday that plans are in place for Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to meet in person. Following a high-level meeting at the White House with NATO officials, the Ukrainian president, and European leaders, Trump said that peace negotiations may be getting closer.
“I had a very good meeting with distinguished guests which ended in a further meeting in the Oval Office,” Trump stated during a Truth Social. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte were among those in attendance.
According to Trump, the discussions centred on European countries working with Washington to give security guarantees for Ukraine. “Everyone is very happy about the possibility of PEACE for Russia/Ukraine,” he stated.
Trump called Putin immediately at the end. “I called President Putin and began the arrangements for a meeting, at a location to be determined, between President Putin and President Zelenskyy,” stated the president.
Trump went on to say he anticipates hosting a trilateral meeting with both leaders following that one-on-one. “After that meeting takes place, we will have a trilat, which would be the two presidents plus myself,” he stated.
According to Trump, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Vice President JD Vance are coordinating the logistics with Kyiv and Moscow.
“This was a very good, early step for a war that has been going on for almost four years,” he continued.
