Police Detain Farmer Leaders Ahead of Planned Protest

On Monday, police stayed alert after hearing that members of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) (Non Political) had reached Shambhu police station a day before their planned protest.

Authorities said the early morning actions were routine to keep peace and order. However, police put farmer leaders under house arrest and set up special check posts (nakas) at important points on highways and smaller roads.

The Malerkotla DSP (Special) confirmed that these nakas were placed on the Ludhiana-Malerkotla, Malerkotla-Khanna, Ahmedgarh-Raikot, and Kup-Payal roads.

Jagjit Dallewal, a leader of SKM (Non Political), was put under house arrest around 4 a.m. He posted a video on social media about his detention.

Earlier on Saturday, Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (Bharat) and SKM (Non Political) had announced a protest for Tuesday outside Shambhu police station. They accused the government of using harsh methods during the recent farmer protests and demanded action against those responsible.

But on Monday morning, many farmer leaders were surprised when roads near their homes were blocked with nakas. While the police didn’t officially announce any arrests, at least six farmer leaders were kept inside their homes.
