Parle-G Sold at ₹2,300 in Gaza as Scarcity Turns Essentials into Luxuries

Parle-G biscuits — a common and affordable snack in India — have become a rare luxury in war-torn Gaza. Due to severe food shortages, one packet of the biscuit is reportedly being sold for over 24 euros (about ₹2,342), nearly 500 times its original price in India.

The crisis came into focus after a heartfelt video posted by Gaza resident Mohammed Jawad went viral. In the video, his daughter Rafif is seen excitedly holding a pack of Parle-G. Jawad wrote, “After a long wait, I finally got Rafif her favourite biscuits today. Even though the price jumped from 1.5 euros to over 24 euros, I just could not deny her the treat.”

The video touched thousands, especially in India, where people took to social media, tagging Indian officials and Parle-G’s manufacturer to help.

One user pointed out that Indian aid, including Parle-G biscuits, was allegedly being seized by Hamas and sold in black markets. “A Rs 5 pack is now being sold for Rs 2,500,” the user said, calling it an exploitation of Palestinian suffering.

Jawad responded, explaining that much of the aid meant for Gaza’s people never reaches them. “Thieves and black marketeers steal the supplies. Flour is sold for around $500, sugar for $90 per kg. Many people can’t afford these prices and risk their lives to find food,” he wrote.

Since the war began in October 2023, Gaza has been under near-total blockade, with very little humanitarian aid reaching civilians. From March to May 2025, only a few trucks were allowed in — and that too after pressure from the international community.
