The Pakistan government may end up paying ₹14 crore in compensation to Masood Azhar, a UN-designated terrorist and chief of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), after 14 of his family members were reportedly killed in recent Indian airstrikes.
As per a statement from the Pakistan Prime Minister’s Office, PM Shehbaz Sharif has announced ₹1 crore compensation per deceased person for the families of those killed in the strikes. The airstrikes, under Operation Sindoor, targeted terror camps in Bahawalpur, a key JeM hub in Pakistan’s Punjab province, around 400 km from Lahore.
Masood Azhar confirmed that the victims included his elder sister and her husband, a nephew and his wife, a niece, and five children from his extended family. If Azhar is the sole legal heir, he could receive the entire ₹14 crore compensation.
The move has raised global concern, as Masood Azhar is wanted for several deadly terror attacks, including the 2001 Indian Parliament attack and the 2019 Pulwama attack.
