Opposition Slams AAP for Suspending MLA Kunwar Vijay Pratap Over Drug and Sacrilege Allegations

The opposition parties in Punjab have strongly criticized the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for suspending its Amritsar MLA Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh. They claim he was punished for speaking the truth and raising serious questions about the government’s failure to act on drug trafficking and sacrilege cases.

Kunwar Vijay Pratap, a former IPS officer, had recently been outspoken against his own party’s government. After the recent spurious liquor tragedy in Amritsar, he alleged that people involved in the illegal liquor business were now part of the ruling regime. He also questioned why Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia was suddenly arrested in a disproportionate assets case.

Leader of the Opposition, Partap Singh Bajwa from Congress, said the MLA’s only fault was that he exposed the government’s failures. He called the suspension a “badge of honour” for standing up for the truth and the people of Punjab.

Congress state chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring said that although the suspension was an internal party matter, the government must still answer the questions raised by the MLA — especially those about the drug crisis and sacrilege cases. He said millions of Punjabis want the same answers.

BJP leader Anil Sarin also spoke out, reminding that the MLA had earlier accused AAP MPs of protecting two police officers involved in illegal drug trade. Instead of investigating the claims, AAP suspended the MLA. Sarin also questioned why the government quietly closed a corruption case against former minister Vijay Singla, even after CM Bhagwant Mann had claimed to have evidence against him.

The incident has sparked major political debate, with many accusing the Punjab government of silencing voices of truth from within.
