The Punjab government has declared a public holiday on July 31 to mark the martyrdom of Shaheed Udham Singh. All government offices, schools and colleges across the state will remain closed on this day.
In addition, the Bhawanigarh-Sunam Road will be officially renamed as Shaheed Udham Singh Marg. This fulfills a long-standing demand of the Kamboj community as Udham Singh was born in Sunam and played a key role in India’s freedom struggle.
Punjab Cabinet Minister and Aam Aadmi Party state president Aman Arora said that the renaming ceremony will take place on Thursday and will be led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal.
Aman Arora stated that Udham Singh’s sacrifice was unforgettable and the whole nation is grateful to him. Since many events and rituals are organised across Punjab on his martyrdom day the Kamboj community had been requesting a state holiday on this date. This demand has now been approved and implemented by the government.
