New Directives for Chandigarh Traffic Police: Vehicles will not be stopped without a violation; avoid stopping cars with families; challans will only be issued via CCTV.

Drivers will now only be stopped by the Chandigarh Traffic Police for breaking traffic laws. DGP Dr. Sagar Preet Hooda has made it clear that a driver should not be stopped without cause if they are not breaking any laws. There have been explicit instructions not to halt vehicles carrying families.

According to the DGP, the goal is to enhance the Chandigarh Police’s reputation. Several recordings of police officers stopping and intimidating drivers at checkpoints recently went viral on social media.

Because of this, manual challans have also been prohibited, and only CCTV cameras will now be used to issue challans.

Prohibition of stopping without cause.

For security and crime prevention, two to three checkpoints are positioned in the evening at each of the city’s police station areas. However, challans were frequently issued by police officers here.

Police station in-charges have now received severe instructions from the DGP stating that cars should only be stopped at checkpoints when the driver has violated a traffic law.

Videos of this arbitrary police behavior have frequently been created, shared on social media, and forwarded to higher-ranking officials. According to the drivers, checkpoints still halt them even when they have all the required paperwork and haven’t breached any traffic laws.

More frequently, vehicles from other states are targeted.

The traffic police frequently stopped cars entering the city from other states in order to demand money. This was most noticeable at crossroads, red lights, and entry points. It was even said that in order to be posted for duty, the munshi (clerk) required payment of millions of rupees.

The system has seen adjustments since DGP Sagar Preet assumed leadership. According to him, challans would henceforth only be issued for violating traffic laws, and the procedure will be entirely open and transparent.
