Mumbai Police Registers FIR Against Comedian Kunal Kamra and Shiv Sena Workers Over Controversial Remarks and Vandalism

Mumbai police have registered an FIR against stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra for allegedly making defamatory remarks against Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde during a recent show. The comedian’s comments, which included a taunting reference to Shinde using a modified Hindi song, sparked outrage, leading to further clashes.

Kamra’s comments, which were made during a live show, were reportedly captured in a viral video where he referred to Shinde with a “gaddar” (traitor) jibe. This led to a backlash from the ruling Mahayuti coalition, with some leaders calling Kamra a “contract comedian” and warning that he would face severe consequences for targeting Shinde.

In response, nearly 40 Shiv Sena workers, enraged by Kamra’s comments, allegedly vandalized the Habitat Studio in Mumbai’s Khar area, where the show was filmed, and a hotel housing the studio. The police confirmed that several Shiv Sena workers had damaged the property and clashed with staff and police.

A FIR was filed against Kamra under Sections 353(1)(b) (statements conducing to public mischief) and 356(2) (defamation). Kamra also mocked the ruling NCP and Shiv Sena, adding fuel to the controversy.

In addition, the police registered another FIR against 19 Shiv Sena functionaries, including Rahul Kanal, Kunal Sarmalkar, and Akshay Panvelkar, along with 15-20 unidentified persons for their involvement in the vandalism. Kanal and 11 others were arrested.

Shiv Sena leaders, including MLA Murji Patel, demanded an apology from Kamra within two days, threatening further actions if their demand was not met. Shiv Sena MP Naresh Mhaske warned Kamra that he would not be allowed to move freely in Maharashtra, claiming the comedian had crossed a line and would face consequences.

State Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik also visited the police station, alleging that the Habitat Studio, where the controversial show was filmed, was illegal. Sarnaik further emphasized that the Shiv Sena would not tolerate mocking of their leaders and called for strict actions against those involved.

On the other hand, political opposition leaders have condemned the FIR as a “mockery of law,” with Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant questioning the validity of the charges. Sawant argued that the FIR was filed to intimidate political opponents, and called for clarification on what can and cannot be said when criticizing the government. AAP leader Preeti Sharma Menon expressed her support for Kamra, criticizing the ruling government for its lack of action in maintaining peace.

This incident has sparked a wider debate over freedom of speech, with some defending Kamra’s right to comedic commentary while others argue that there should be legal consequences for defamatory remarks against public figures. The police are continuing to investigate the case.
