On the first day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, Member of Rajya Sabha Satnam Singh Sandhu requested the Union Government to honour three great freedom fighters from Punjab — Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Shaheed Udham Singh, and Shaheed Madan Lal Dhingra — with the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award.
Sandhu said it is unfortunate that even after 77 years of Independence, these brave martyrs have not received the Bharat Ratna. He called it a “grave injustice” to their unmatched sacrifices. He reminded everyone that Shaheed Bhagat Singh was only 23 when he gave his life for the country, and his revolutionary ideas still inspire young Indians.
He said Shaheed Udham Singh brought justice for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre by killing General Dyer in London. Shaheed Madan Lal Dhingra shocked the British Empire in 1909 by killing Curzon Wylie, becoming one of the earliest symbols of India’s armed resistance.
Sandhu said the demand for Bharat Ratna is not just the voice of Punjab but of the entire country. He urged the government to “correct this historical wrong” and give these heroes the recognition they truly deserve.
