A ਪਿੰਡ in ਪੰਜਾਬ’s Moga ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹਾ has taken a big step to fight drug and alcohol addiction. Ransih Kalan ਪਿੰਡ, in Nihal Singh Wala subdivision, has become the first in the state to offer a reward of ₹11,000 to families whose members have given up drugs or alcohol.
The ਪਿੰਡ panchayat is also giving ₹1,100 every month for a year to ਲੋਕ undergoing treatment at de-addiction centres. On Saturday, 30 families were honoured with ₹11,000 each and certificates of appreciation.
Moga Deputy Commissioner Sagar Setia praised the ਪਿੰਡ, calling the initiative progressive and inspiring. He urged other panchayats across ਪੰਜਾਬ to take similar action and help make their areas drug-free.
Sarpanch Mintu shared that the ਪਿੰਡ has also taken other steps for better living. Since 2019, they’ve been running a campaign called “Ransih Kalan Banuga ਪੰਜਾਬ di Shaan” (Ransih Kalan Will Become ਪੰਜਾਬ’s Pride).
As part of the campaign:
Plastic waste collected by residents is exchanged for sugar
ਲੋਕ who plant trees get fruit or flower saplings along with money to promote environmental awareness
Book readers are rewarded with cash to encourage learning
Even sewage water is treated and reused for farming to save water and protect the environment
Ransih Kalan is now being seen as a model ਪਿੰਡ for its efforts toward health, environment, and education.
