Prime Minister Narendra Modi returned to Delhi early Wednesday and immediately took a briefing on the terror attack that happened in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on Tuesday.
Top officials including National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar, and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri gave the briefing. Government sources said the Prime Minister was informed about the situation right at the airport.
The government is now considering all options and will decide carefully on the next steps to respond to the attack.
The terror attack took place at the popular tourist area of Pahalgam in south Kashmir. At least 26 people were killed and many others injured. Among the dead were two foreign nationals from the UAE and Nepal, and two locals. Five people from Maharashtra were also among those killed.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has asked Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu to arrange a special flight to bring back the bodies and stranded tourists from Maharashtra. Minister Naidu agreed and said arrangements will be made once the list of stranded people is ready.
Leaders from around the world have expressed their sorrow. U.S. President Donald Trump spoke with PM Modi and sent his condolences. Russian President Vladimir Putin wrote to President Droupadi Murmu to show support. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and the UAE also sent their condolences.
Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli tweeted his condolences and confirmed Nepal is working with Indian authorities to verify reports about a Nepali citizen being among the victims.
