A massive 100-foot breach in the Rajbaha (canal) in Bathinda’s Sai Nagar locality early Friday morning triggered widespread flooding, causing extensive damage to homes and property.
The breach occurred around 1 am, when residents woke up to large volumes of water entering their homes. Panic spread quickly as water flooded streets and houses within minutes, forcing many to flee to rooftops for safety.
Residents alleged that while government officials arrived at the scene shortly after the incident, no immediate help was provided for evacuation or to safeguard belongings. It was local councillor Shyam Lal Jain who stepped in to help rescue stranded residents. The lack of a coordinated rescue response from authorities left many people angry and frustrated.
To contain the flooding, the Irrigation Department halted the water supply from the Gobindpura Head. Officials said the breach spans approximately 100 feet and repairs are expected to take three days.
The flooding has caused significant economic losses. Many families reported destruction of household items, including goods bought on EMI. Farmers also suffered heavily, with several reporting total loss of their cotton crops due to waterlogging.
