Mansa Court Gives Sidhu Moosewala’s Father Time Until July 1 to Respond in BBC Documentary Case

A local court in Mansa has granted time until July 1 to Balkaur Singh, father of slain Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala, to file his response in a case involving a BBC documentary on the late artist.

The directive comes after Singh failed to submit his reply on the scheduled date, June 23. The court is hearing an application filed by the BBC World Service and two of its employees, who have challenged the maintainability of the suit filed against them regarding the documentary titled “The Killing Call.”

The BBC’s legal team argued on June 16 that the case should not be heard in Mansa, as the cause of action and jurisdiction do not fall within the district. The court had then asked Balkaur Singh to respond by June 23.

Earlier, Singh had approached the court seeking a stay on the documentary, claiming it was made without the family’s consent and could hurt their sentiments. The court initially directed the BBC to submit a formal reply by June 16.

The two-part documentary, reportedly detailing Moosewala’s life and tragic death, was released on June 11, coinciding with the singer’s birth anniversary. Moosewala, a globally popular Punjabi singer, was shot dead on May 29, 2022, in Jawaharke village of Mansa district — a killing that drew widespread national and international attention.

The next hearing will determine whether the case proceeds in Mansa or is deemed beyond the court’s jurisdiction.
